CHAPTER 21 – No Den Allowed

We made our way west toward the Builder’s Guild. It was a few minutes walk from the Adventurer’s Guild and sat on the opposite side of the main street, towering over the temple and public bath house at its sides.

I couldn't help but admire the nice weather as we made our way through the streets. The sun shone brightly, and a gentle breeze blew in from the east, making it the perfect day for a stroll.

Grommasch walked alongside me, looking a bit uncomfortable. I could tell he was hesitant to talk, which meant that if I wanted to get anything out of him, I’d have to pry. I decided to start easy.

“Say, where are you from, Grom?”

Grommasch looked down at his large feet and hesitated for a moment, inhaling and exhaling several times before he looked up again, seemingly ready to speak.

“I do not wish to talk about my past or myself, even though you paid for my freedom. Please don’t pry, but I will try and tell you anything I feel you should know.”

“Whoa, now, Grom, I’m not going to pry for stuff, alright? I’m just curious about who you are and where you’re from.”

“Ironhold,” he said, speaking the name with pride, though his expression didn’t mirror the tone.

“Where exactly is it?”

“It sits between the Sweeping Forest and the Grave Mountains,” he added, nodding southward. His gaze lingered there for a moment, and he grew silent immediately after replying to my question, which I had to admit bothered me a bit. He was really bad at leading a conversation, that much was clear.

“Ironhold, huh? What's it like there?” I asked, trying to get to the important matter, his family but didn’t want to pry too openly.

Though I had never seen the city, I knew some things about it. Ironhold was our main supplier of ores and minerals. The relationship between the cities was strenuous at best, and openly hostile at worst, though no arms had been raised for a long time now.

“It's a city of rock and ore. The days are short and made shorter by the billowing smoke of the forges. Life is…” His red eyes dropped to the stone beneath his feet. He snorted, “Tough,” he replied, his voice laced with bitterness.

“Most days I worked for fifteen or sixteen hours just so my family had enough to get by.”

“Your family? They’re alive?” I asked, feigning surprise.

“My wife, a woman of stainless steel, and my two young sons, shoulders as wide as cartwheels, arms that can crush a rock.” For a moment I thought he’d smile, but instead, a frown quickly found his brow.

“Yes, my family is still there, and I worry about them every day.”

“Why's that?”

“Because they have no one to provide for them, boss. We elgar are worth nothing without our toil. A woman of our kind and her children are of little use in the eyes of…” He snorted in derision at the name he swallowed.

“You know Ironhold by the ores you buy, but you know little of the death and savagery of its streets.
